FOOTSTEPS OF MY PAST

(c) John Mayer

FOOTSTEPS OF MY PAST

'tis the green hills of Ireland that call me home
for they hold the footsteps of my past.
They protect the very souls of my ancestors
the essence of my being, my Mother's family.
She so longed to visit the land she called home
to feel the mists upon her face
and the wind in her hair.
She longed to walk the lanes her Mother did
as a young girl growing up in Clare..
to hear the laughter and the songs
the brogue that sweetens the very air.
She dreamt of peat burning in the hearth..
family she never knew, welcoming Biddy's girl.
She wanted to tell them her Mam never forgot
and that she was happy in her new land she called home…
that she and her sister, Molly, kept the old stories alive
that they sang the songs of their birthplace…
But it wasn't to be, my Mother left us too soon
as her Mother had left her.
I will go home for you, my dear Mother
home to the green hills of Ireland you loved to call home.

    TALES OF BRIAN BORU

BRIAN BORU - THE LAST GREAT HIGH KING OF IRELAND:
The line between Irish Legend and Irish Myth has often been blurred, especially as the retelling of heroic deeds has been passed on through generations. Brian Boru was no legend although his life deeds were legendary. He was very much a real man and was in fact the last great High King of Ireland and perhaps the greatest military leader the country has ever known. Brian Boru was born Brian Mac Cennétig. He mother was sister to the mother of Conor, the King of Connaught. His brother, Mahon, had become King of Munster in 951, upon the death of their father, Cennétig. Together they fought against the invading Norsemen, who had imposed taxes in Munster. This struggle eventually led to the murder of Mahon in 975 by the Ostermen (Norse). Brian avenged his brother's death by killing the King of the Ostermen of Limerick, King Ímar. From this point onwards Brian held Munster as his own, including the pivotal trade-centre of Limerick. He marched into Connaught and Leinster and joined forces with Mael Sechnaill II in 997. Together they divided Ireland between them. The Norse settlers in Dublin especially ranged against Brian but were defeated at Glen Máma where the King of Leinster was captured. The King of Dublin, Sitric Silkenbeard, was soon defeated too. In 1002 Brian demanded of his comrade Mael Sechnaill that he recognize him as King of Ireland. Mael agreed, partially because many of his own people viewed Brian as a hero who had restored Ireland to greatness after the Viking invasions. The rule of the UíNéill's was thus at an end as a non-O'Neill was proclaimed as King. The O'Neill's had been rulers for over 600 years. He earned his name as 'Brian of the Tributes' (Brian Boru) by collecting tributes from the minor rulers of Ireland and used the monies raised to restore monasteries and libraries that had been destroyed during the invasions. The Norsemen were not done yet however, and once more waged war on Brian Boru and his followers at Clontarf in Dublin in 1014. The King of Connaught, Tadhg O'Conor refused to ally with Brian against the Ostermen although Uí Fiachrach Aidne and Uí Maine did join with him. Despite the lack of backing from the men of Connaught, the Munstermen won the day but lost Brian Boru in the battle. This battle was a major turning point as it finally subjugated the Norse presence in Ireland who were henceforth considered subordinate to the Kingships of Ireland. Their military threat had been ended and they retreated to the urban centres of Dublin, Waterford, Limerick, Wexford, and Cork. They eventually became completely hibernicized and integrated into Gaelic culture. After his death and the death of one of his sons, his remaining sons, Tadg and Donnchad, were unable to assume the kingship which was assumed by Mael Sechnaill. He died in 1022 after which the role of High King of Ireland became more of a position in name only, rather than that of a powerful ruler. Perhaps the best that should be said of Brian Boru therefore, is that he was the last great High King of Ireland. Brian Boru - An article provided by The Information about Ireland Site. USAGE:THIS ARTICLE MAY BE REPRODUCED ON YOUR WEB SITE OR IN YOUREZINE OR NEWSLETTER ONCE THE FOLLOWING COPYRIGHT AND 'LINK' TO

    Ennis Chronicle 19 Apr 1815

Being informed that Michael Donnellan of Kilquane in my absence illegally assumed some illegal title in part of the lands of Doolick late in the possession of Francis O'Mara, Esq., and has illegally attempted to sell same in small divisions. I hereby caution you and each of you against dealing with said Michael Donnellan until he produces you his title to said lands, of which he has none, his Title Deed and Lease having been long since conveyed and assigned to me, and the same regularly registered. I now refer you to Richard Scott, Esq., Attorney, who has same, and I further give you notice that the arrear of £300 and upwards is now due of said lands to my creditors, and that if you attempt under any illegal Title of his, to till or occupy any part of said lands, that I will take such proceedings against you as I shall be advised both for legal possesion and for recovery of the arrear. Dated this 27th day of April 1814.
    John Donnellan.

Ed. Note... I wonder if said Michael Donnellan was a son of John Donellan?

    Arthur.

    Note from Declan...

Looks like you could have got a 'lottery win' if you took out life assurance
    on someone else.
Poses the question did Walter die naturally ?

    Ennis Chronicle 15 April 1815

On Monday last, an act of outrage as unjustifiable as it was unprevoked, took place in the suburbs of this town. About 2 o'clock a poor traveller was assailed by some unthinking wretches who making use of the epithet " Hangman " - soon collected a vast crowd, amoung whom we are concerned to observe, that not a single feature of humanity was descernable - all seemed alike determined on Murder, as it was next to a miracle that the miserable stranger, covered with wounds and contusions, made his way into the house of Newpark, where he was protected, by Mr. Mahon, until a military guard arrived to disperse the savages who seemed to thirst for the blood of their fellow creature.

CLARE COUNTY LIBRARY... more than just a Library...

    CLARE COUNTY LIBRARY

Gone are the days when Libraries were places where you dare not utter a word
other than to very quietly ask a librarian for help...
Even then, you were often pointed towards a dusty card index drawer and left to find things yourself.
Today, libraries are vibrant places, full of happy people with very helpful librarians. They are community gathering places, places for exhibitions, for music and all manners of technology.

They are no longer slumbering repositories, but are
vibrant, lively and a pleasure to visit.

    County Clare's Library, Ennis
     is no exception.
Locals will already know how great it is, but so do many hundreds, nay, thousands,
of researchers across the world who are interested in all things Irish,
    especially Irish history /family history/genealogy.

There are thousands of photographs, records of all kinds, digitised and hard copies, all available either online or accessible with the help of the enthusiastic staff who are only too happy to help.

Many of the records have been transcribed by volunteers... wander though the collections and see what you can find..
