FOUND HIM DEAD

Ex Senator Frank B. Arnold Commits Suicide.
Discovered in his Office at Unadilla Thursday morning with a bullet in his brain and a pistol in his hand.  Tragic end of a Prominent Republican.

Albany, New York.  December 11, 1890
A dispatch from Unadille, N.Y. just received in this city says that Ex Senator Frank B. Arnold of Unadilla, the representative of the Twenty Third district in the Senate of 1888 – 9, committed suicide in his law office some time between 6 and 7 o’clock this morning.  He was found dead in the office about 10 o’clock with a bullet hole in his temple and a revolver clutched in his right hand.  No cause is assigned for the rash deed.  It is thought that he was in financial straits and that the matter preyed upon his mind.
Frank B. Arnold, of Unadille, as he was known all over the state, was a leading Republican.  He was born in Co. Clare, Ireland, March 20, 1839.  He came to America while a child and was educated at Gilbertsville Academy and at Hamilton College.  He taught school with ability and was admitted to the bar, where he achieved distinction and success.  He became supervisor of Unadilla in 1879 and held office unit 1885.  Part of the time he was chairman of the board.  He was member of assembly in 1885, 1886 and 1887 and took an important part in legislature affairs.  In 1887 he was a member of the special committee of which Colonel Alexander S. Bacon was chairman, appointed to investigate the conduct of Brooklyn’s municipal affairs.  In 1888 and 1889 he was a member of the state Senate.  The district represented comprises the counties of Otsego, Herkimer and Madison.  Mr Arnold was a member of this body and among the leaders.  He was a pronounced Platt man.  The investigation of the sugar and other trials was conducted by a committee of which he was chairman.  He was defeated for renomination by Titus Sheard of Herkimer and for Congress last fall in the 24th District, comprising the counties of Schoharie, Osego and Herkimer.   He was defeated by George Van Horn, the Democratic Candidate.  Mr Arnold was a widower and leaves one daughter.  He lived in a fine mansion near Osego lake and was a most genial and hospitable man.  During the last two years of his life in Albany he formed one of a household including Sen. Eugene F. O’Connor of Brooklyn; Sen. Eugene S. Ives of New York and the late Assemblyman Robert Ray Hamilton.  Robert Ray Hamilton whose tragic story has been so terribly closed in the wilds of the Yellowstone Country.
The United Press representative informed Colonel William of the sad event and he immediately sent a despatch to Governor Bill in New York.  Mr Arnold was in Albany less than two weeks, and a visitor at the executive chamber.  He appeared cheerful and did not speak of his defeat.  People here who were acquainted with Mr Arnold was very much startled at the news.  It is said that he has continually brooded over his wife’s death, which occurred about two years ago.   Only lately he deplored the fact that in erecting a proposal monument he would cut off the last tie between the dead and himself, and do the last act of kindness possible.  Secretary of State Rice paid a splendid tribute to his memory today, saying the he was an honest upright man.

AUGUST, 1879
William J. Hynes, member of Congress from Arkansas, elected by the State at large to the 43 Congress 1873-5.  He was born in Co. Clare, Ireland about 36 years ago, though he does not look more that 30.  He came to this country in 1854 and completed his education in the office of the Springfield (Mass) Republican.  He has been a printing clerk, lecturer and editor, was a student at the Junior & Senior Courses of law lecturers in Columbus College 1869-70 and was admitted to the bar at Little Rock in Arkansas in 1870 and in 1872 was elected to Congress, by a majority of 12,437, as a Reform Rep.  He is now a prominent lawyer in the City of Chicago.  He is on a visit to relatives residing in Brooklyn.

DEATH OF DANIEL O'DEA FROM COORACLARE bn 1833,

BROTHER OF MARTIN AND MARY O'DEA ARRIVING 1864 WITH WIFE ELLEN YAELLER

The Brisbane Courier (Qld. : 1864 - 1933) Friday 13 November 1868
A MAGISTERIAL inquiry was held by Mr H. H. Massie, yesterday, at the Police Court, touching the death by drowning of Daniel O'Dea, in the Brisbane River, on Tuesday even- ing. The first witness examined was Jacob Sheffield, working on the Russell Street ferry, who deposed that the deceased had been a fellow labourer with him; on Tuesday evening, about 8 o'clock, they had just brought the punt over to the north side, and were lifting the warp out of the rollers, when it carried O'Dea over; O'Dea remained on the top of the water for about half a minute, witness could not swim, but jumped in after O'Dea immediately, he did not reach him however, the tide carried deceased up the river, his body was dragged for all night, but was not found till Wednesday afternoon, it was found about five rods higher up the river than where deceased fell in; deceased had been working on that ferry for about six months, and on the Alice Street ferry for the six previous months , he was quite sober at the time of his death. Other witnesses were examined, and corroborated this evidence but nothing further was elicited, except that the deceased was of very sober habits. The finding of Mr Massie was in accordance with the evidence.

DEATH OF Mr Martin O'Dea.

News, was brought into town yesterday morning of the the passing away of Mr. Martin O'Dea, of Deer Park, Lord John Swamp, which sad event took place at on early hour yester day. Mr. O'Dea was 70 years of age, and was bom in County Clare, Ireland (KILMACDUHAN according to marriage cert). He emigrated to these colonies 46 years ago, and immediately proceeded up to the Downs. When free selection was first introduced into this portion of the State, Mr. O'Dea was fortunate enough to secure the holding which he retained till the time of his death. He and his good wife bore the vicissitudes and troubles of a pioneer's life; but the fighting spirit of the Celt was strong in Mr. O'Dea, and he weathered the storm. He was of a most kindly disposition, his home was always welcome to the stranger, and a more hospitable man never lived. His death has removed from our midst another land mark-another of the old residents, who are slowly but surely crossing the bar. Though his death was expected, yet the tidings of his demise were received with feel ings of genuine regret. He is survived by a widow and seven grown up children, Councillor Pat O'Dea, Elbow Valley ; Mr. John O'Dea, Western Hotel, Toowoomba ; Mrs Pendock, Royal Hotel, Chinchilla ; Mrs. Kennane, Bundamba ; Mr. Tom and Steven O'Dea, Deer Park ; and Mr Daniel O'Dea who is at present in one of the other States. The deceased had a large family connection in the town and district, and to the members his family and their relations we extend our sincere sympathy. The funeral is timed to be at St. Mary's at 2:30 to-day.

OBITUARY MRS MARY CAVANAGH nee O'DEA 31 May 1922 Warwick Daily News (Qld. : 1919 -1954) Friday 2 June 1922

It is with deep regret we announce the death of Mrs. Mary Cavanagh, of Freestone, wife of Mr. John Cavanagh, who passed away on Wednesday evening, about 8 o'clock, at the, residence of Mr. Daniel Mahony, of Sladevale. The deceased lady was aged 85 years. She was born in County Clare, Ireland, and arrived in Queensland about 58 years ago in tho sailing ship, "General Caulfield." In this State she met and married Mr. Cavanagh. Their first home was at Glengallan, but they subsequently removed to Freestone. The deceased lady was immensely popular with all who had the honour of her acquaintance. She was one of those fast vanishing early arrivals in this country who considered it a first duty to make a home and then to help and aid a neighbour. Her demise will, therefore, be sincerely deplored by a very wide circle of friends. She is survived by her husband and the following well known family:—Mrs. Cornelius Carmody (Freestone), Mrs. Daniel Mahony Sladevale), and Mrs. T. O'Dempsey (Freestone). The only son is Mr. John Cavanagh, of Pilton. The funeral will leave the residence of Mr. Daniel Mahony at 1.30 to-day, and will arrive at St. Mary's Church at 2.45. After the service there the cortege will proceed to the Warwick cemetery. The funeral arrangements are in the hands of Mr. William O'Brien.
