WHELAN
Philip John Whelan, a chemist, has been missing since Monday from his home at Derwent-Street, Glebe. His friends are anxious about him, as he is subject to fits and also has heart disease. It is thought that he went to Bondi on Monday. Whelan is described as being 45 years of age, 5ft 10in in height, of florid complexion and slight build, dark hair, and beard turning grey. He was wearing a blue serge coat, grey trousers and hard (?) hat.

HACKETT  plus cryptic messages...

  1. Very interesting. I guess it was so easy to just disappear from society back then. I wonder how many of these people were 'found'.

    1. I wonder also, Bev. It saddens me to see that some haven't been heard of in many years... I realise communication wasn't easy, but it must have been so hard to leave families behind or have loved ones leave.
      Thanks for your comment.

  2. Thank you for collating al of these - although none are relatives of mine - it was well worth a look, and I am sure it will help some with their research

  3. I keep hoping that one day my gt uncle will appear in lists like these, but I know his siblings made no effort to look for him

    1. Donna, I wish you luck. Keep looking as you never know if perhaps a friend was searching for him.
I'm still searching for my husband's great grandfather, missing from records since c 1873. I've ploughed through Police Gazettes, hospital registers, unclaimed letters ( found a few waiting for either him or his son, same name) anything I can think of. I've set Google alerts, TROVE alerts..for when new things are posted..read through so many odd lists, but he's still hiding.
Surely they can't escape us forever.

  4. I found a relation on the list Ellen Moloney, which I haven't been able to find out where she came from. Thank you

    2. For those wondering which list, it is 1908.. and Ellen left Cork to go to Sydney!

  5. I keep hoping also - we have lost William Castings a boy convict who came to Tasmania and disappeared after his Pardon.
The cryptics are an interesting thing of the time
Thank you fore keeping us up with details and good luck with yours

    1. Not a very common name. I'll watch out for it as I delve for more information. I do love those cryptic messages. It's tempting to wonder what the real messages were, an assignation perhaps, or maybe even a forerunner of SP bookies?
My pleasure, I just hope that these clippings can help others.. You will hear me loud and clear if I find one of mine. I appreciate your comment.
