Susan Bonfield

Susan Bonfield joined the Sisters of Mercy and became Mother Agatha of St. Xavier's Academy, Chicago. Michael W. Bonfield became an undertaker on Archer ave. and died Dec. 6, 1914, aged 54 yrs. His daughter, Estelle, married Mr. Thomas Finucane in St. Bridget's Church in November, 1886. James H. Bonfield was born in Buffalo, NY on Dec. 25, 1842. He joined the Chgo. Police Force as a detective. For several years he was a deputy jailer. James died Dec. 22, 1915, aged 72 yrs. Martin L. Bonfield (Oct. 1, 1849-Feb. 16, 1935) was connected with the Union Iron & Steel Works. Maria Bonfield (April 22, 1846-July 23, 187?), the youngest of the family married John O'Malley, one of Chicago's heaviest pork packers. The father, Thomas Bonfield died in 1885. According to Griffith's Valuation of Ireland, the family name is found exclusively in the Union of Kilrush in the Co. Clare.

Thomas Bonfield

Bonfield, Thomas and Catherine of Co. Clare, Ireland, were the parents of this prominent family closely associated with the neighborhood of Bridgeport. There is even a street in that neighborhood to this day, named after the most prominent of the sons--Capt. John Bonfield of the Chicago Police Dept. John was born April, 1836 in Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada, where his parents had emigrated prior to his birth. The family then moved to Buffalo, NY in 1842, and in the summer of 1844 settled in Chicago.

DEATH

James MULVIHILL

In the IGP County Clare Group on Facebook, the following information was added below this clipping. I have chosen to add Murray's additional information here for your convenience. Thanks to both Paul O'Brien for posting the clipping above, and Murray Michael Ginnane for providing the extra information below.

Murray Michael Ginnane To allow for the 1836 transmission of this news to reach London, I'm guessing that this wedding was planned, & it was just before the Shrovetide marriage season ended on Tues Feb 16th? Perhaps it was on Friday 12th Feb 1836 ? :
James Mulvihill from Moyarta East was reported as married on a previous Friday before Sunday Feb 28th 1836 and he died the next day at Carrigaholt. See The Examiner ( London, England), Issue 1465 of Sunday, February 28, 1836. The house where he died was next / near to the Catholic Presbytery, near the beach about a half-mile north of Carrigaholt. Where the road direct to Kilkee branches northwest up the hill past Moyarta Cemetery. The Carrigaholt Parochial House is over the L2006 road from the beach, at coordinates N 52.608461, -9.707740 E , still there amongst a group of houses. [The historic local body / council Animal Pound was just southwest of there.]
--
From “The Examiner” of Feb 28th 1836 : A young man at Carrigaholt died suddenly last Saturday. He had been married on the Friday and on Saturday was enjoying himself playing for his friends on the Highland Pipes when he suddenly complained of fatigue, lay on his bed & died in the next few minutes. [ Perhaps previous rheumatic fever had left his heart liable to post-prandial, post-nuptial stress? ]

  1. Thanks to Paul O'Brien & Chris Goopy. Some of these snippets link to major events & some beg the curiosity: "What happened next?" --- This entry is designated as "MARRIAGE" above, but it must be a DEATH in NY ? :---
“Irish News and Belfast Morning News” of Monday Jan 15th 1894 : on Dec 17th 1893 at 93 Union St, Brooklyn, NY Thomas Studdert-Gibson, aged 50yrs, eldest son of a near namesake Thomas Gibson, Esq., Island View, Kilrush. This is a death notice?

    1. Thanks for letting me know about the error.. apologies for the confusion. It has been corrected.
I fully understand the wanting to know what happened next, but to keep this site going and adding to it all the time, there simply isn't time to follow up. However, if you are so inclined, you can always contact me and I'd be happy to add more to the story. The best way is to use the contact address in About Me.
Thanks for your comment, much appreciated.
