Ennis Chronicle 1815, Donellan, Arthur, Newpark House, Mahon,

The following are all courtesy of Declan Barron. Much appreciated.

Ennis Chronicle 19 Apr 1815

Being informed that Michael Donnellan of Kilquane in my absence illegally assumed some illegal title in part of the lands of Doolick late in the possession of Francis O'Mara, Esq., and has illegally attempted to sell same in small divisions. I hereby caution you and each of you against dealing with said Michael Donnellan until he produces you his title to said lands, of which he has none, his Title Deed and Lease having been long since conveyed and assigned to me, and the same regularly registered. I now refer you to Richard Scott, Esq., Attorney, who has same, and I further give you notice that the arrear of £300 and upwards is now due of said lands to my creditors, and that if you attempt under any illegal Title of his, to till or occupy any part of said lands, that I will take such proceedings against you as I shall be advised both for legal possesion and for recovery of the arrear. Dated this 27th day of April 1814.
John Donnellan.

Ed. Note... I wonder if said Michael Donnellan was a son of John Donellan?

Ennis Chronicle 21 Apr 1815

By the decease of our late townsman, Walter Arthur, Esq., we find that John
O'Donnell, of Newbridge, Esq., has been paid 1000L. and G. E. Bruce, Esq.,
of the city of Limerick, 1850L. British, being the amount of assurances
effected by those Gentlemen with the Globe Company on the life of Mr.
Arthur.

Note from Declan...

Looks like you could have got a 'lottery win' if you took out life assurance
on someone else.
Poses the question did Walter die naturally ?

Ennis Chronicle 15 April 1815

On Monday last, an act of outrage as unjustifiable as it was unprevoked, took place in the suburbs of this town. About 2 o'clock a poor traveller was assailed by some unthinking wretches who making use of the epithet " Hangman " - soon collected a vast crowd, amoung whom we are concerned to observe, that not a single feature of humanity was descernable - all seemed alike determined on Murder, as it was next to a miracle that the miserable stranger, covered with wounds and contusions, made his way into the house of Newpark, where he was protected, by Mr. Mahon, until a military guard arrived to disperse the savages who seemed to thirst for the blood of their fellow creature.

WATERPARK HOUSE

Clare Roots Society is marking the end of Ennis Town Council link with Waterpark House with the publication of a booklet on the building and its people. In April 1989 the Urban Council moved its administrative headquarters from No. 1 Bindon Street to Waterpark House, Drumbiggle.  In choosing Waterpark House as the location for the new Town Hall, the Urban Council was strongly influenced by the desire to conserve one of the town’s fine vernacular buildings and to provide tangible evidence of the Council’s strong commitment to the renewal and conservation of the town’s historic core area.

The house construction dates back to 1819 with the families of Dulhunty, Pilkington, O’Brien, Russell, Lane, Connellan, Hardwood and Moody associated with the house. The first recorded residents of Waterpark house were the Dulhunty family where in September 1819 Mary Dulhunty was born to Montrose Dulhunty & Mary O’ Donnell. The last resident of the house was Lily Moody who died at Cahercalla Hospital on the 31st December 1993. Lily lived prior to her hospitalisation all her life at Waterpark.

The Booklet will include details on the Waterpark Riots, which took place in 1855 when at Waterpark gate more than 100 persons assembled, who were shouting; yelling and crying ‘souper’. This was as a result of the denouncement of Scriptural teachers by the Ennis priests, which was considered so violent as to endanger the lives of Protestant missionaries who stayed at Waterpark at the hands of an Ennis mob.

As part of the research the final publication will also include details on the Butter Market building which is now part of the Civic Building associated with Waterpark. The Plot of ground where the Butter Market is situated was purchased in 1860. The owners the Macbeth Family used the building as a weigh house & butter market along with the yards for tolls, customs, fares & markets. The Butter market closed in 1945. In 1920 a Company of British Infantry used the yard as a Transport Park. Ennis Badminton Club & The Boxing Club used this building between 1933 and 1950 while in the ownership of Ennis Urban District Council. The building was also owned by the building firms of Garvey Solan & Co. Ltd. & Ryan Brothers. It was refurbished for the Town Council offices in 2001.

The booklet is being edited by Larry Brennan in collaboration with Declan Barron (Newpark House, Ennis) & Katrina Pilkington Vincent (Australia). Katrina is the great great granddaughter of Thomas Pilkington one of the previous owners of the house.

The Society is appealing to those who may have any information, memorabilia, photos, letters or contact details to make contact with secretary@clareroots.org or Larry Brennan at bbs.ennis@eircom.net or (087) 2308100

A letter from W. H. Bourne, Esq., dated Dunkerrin, Wednesday night, 8 o'clock, states, amoung other impediments and hardships occasioned by the snow, that Thomas Mahon, Esq., Counsellor at Law, and his brother Captain Charles Mahon, Paymaster of the Clare Regiment, both sons to Charles Mahon, Esq., Chairman of this County, could scarce get with four horses to Monegal, the drifting snow having choaked up the passages which had been cleared, and that they were obliged to wade from that to Greenhills, the seat of their relative, Mr. Minchin, where we are happy to say they arrived in perfect safety, after encountering, as must be imagined, some difficulty, and sustaining a degree of hardship inseperable from the circumstance.
