WALK AT CAHERCONNELL, 18 AUGUST 2013

The final outing in the Old Kilfarboy Society's summer season of walks will take place next Sunday, 18 August, with a visit to Caherconnell Fort.

Dr Michelle Comber, Director of the Caherconnell Archaeological Field Study, will conduct a presentation of the archaeology of the fort, from prehistoric settlement to the lives of the medieval O'Loughlins. All participants will receive a Caherconnell Booklet, which gives details about the archaeological digs at the site to date.

Participants should meet at the church car park in Miltown Malbay at 1.30pm or on site at Caherconnell at 2.30pm. Price: €10.

KILRUSH FAMINE COMMEMORATION, KILRUSH MAY 3RD TO 12TH 2013

On Friday the National Famine Commemoration Event will get off to an official start in Carrigaholt at 6 pm with a performance and oral history on famine times followed by a lecture in Carrigaholt Parish Hall by Tom Power on the Role Australia played in the Irish Famine.

A whole week of events followed all across the former Kilrush Poor Law Union leading up to the official ceremony which President Michael D Higgins will preside over.

This very special event is covered in both articles in the Irish Times today.

I am also attaching an invitation on behalf of the Old Kilfarboy Society, where you are cordially invited to the launch of The Mass Evictions in Kilrush Poor Law Union During the Great Famine by Matt Lynch which will take place at 8pm, on Tuesday, 7 May at An Teach Ceoil, Kilrush.  

It promises to be a brilliant week and I know of CRS members worldwide who are getting ready to travel over to this fantastic event.

OLD KILFARBOY SOCIETY PRESENTS IAN LEE...."From the Radio Éireann seanchaí to the stand-up comic"

RTE bringing you the art of the seanchaí and the storyteller since 1926

The final lecture in this season's series presented by the Old Kilfarboy Society will take place on Tuesday, 12 March at 8pm in the Malbay, Miltown Malbay when Ian Lee of RTÉ will present an illustrated talk on how the traditional spoken arts were 

represented on RTÉ Radio since the station's beginnings in 1926.

"From the Radio Éireann seanchaí to the stand-up comic" – takes a look at how Radio Éireann developed the idea of the professional seanchaí, as entertainer, from Barney McCool of Coolaghy to Éamon Kelly and how these 'professional' seanchaithe compared to the more authentic ones, as recorded by Radio Éireann in the field, and were in effect the 

forerunners of what we call today 'stand-up comics'.

Ian Lee is a presenter/producer with RTÉ Radio 1 and Raidió na Gaeltachta. He has presented series such as Shamrock, Rose and Thistle and The Music of the People on Radio 1, which explored the traditional music and song of Ireland, England Scotland and areas of Irish, English and Scottish influence in North America. He has also presented a number of series on Raidió na Gaeltachta including, currently, Siúlach Scéalach, a series which looks at the earliest recordings of the Irish language and its dialects made by Radio Éireann all over Ireland. He has produced two CDs for RTÉ – Amhráin ar an Sean-Nós and The Donegal Fiddle. He regularly lectures on aspects of traditional music and the Irish language as represented in the RTÉ Sound Archive. He has a long association with Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy, where he conducts a workshop, along with singer and broadcaster Brian Mullen, on the history of traditional singing in English and Irish.

The Talty millions: a genealogical journey from Miltown to Miami

The next meeting of the Old Kilfarboy Society will take place on Tuesday, 12 February at 8pm in the Malbay, Miltown Malbay and will feature a lecture by Paddy Waldron on the fascinating story of TJ Talty, who left Miltown for the US in the 1860s and died in Florida in 1926.

TJ's baptism on 12 December 1855 is recorded in Latin in the registers of Miltown Malbay, as Thadeus, youngest child of Timothy Talty and Margaret McNamara. 

He grew up between his parents' shop in Miltown Malbay and their small farm in Knockanalban (Mount Scot) outside the town. Around the mid-1860s, most of the family emigrated together to Massachusetts. From there, TJ later set out on the successful career as a hotel keeper which took him all around the US and eventually to Miami. This talk will trace TJ's travels around the U.S. and describe the process of tracing his heirs using the technologies of the 1920s and of the present day.

OLD KILFARBOY SOCIETY WALK - Knockfierna, place of fairy legends

Next Old Kilfarboy Society Walk

On Sunday 10 June Liam Irwin will do a guided tour of the iconic and legendary Knockfierna (coming from Cnoc Fírinne, "the Hill of Truth")

south west of Adare, Co Limerick.

Knockfierna is associated with fairy legends and is repeatedly mentioned in folklore and mythology.

For those who wish to car pool, please meet at 12.20 pm at the Church Car Park in Miltown Malbay for a 12.30 departure.

Alternatively, meet us in Ballingarry at the foothills of Knockfierna (12.5 km from Adare – first turn left in village on R519),

at the SPAR shop and filling station on the right, just beyond the school at 2 pm.

Ballingarry has an interesting late nineteenth century Catholic church [by JJ McCarthy]

and ruins of a tower house which we might also tour, time allowing.

A modest fee to cover insurance will apply. Strong footwear and rain gear (check the forecast!) recommended.

The Legend Of Knockfierna*

It is a very good thing not to be in any way in dread of the faeries, for without doubt they have then less power over a person,

but to make too free with them or to disbelieve in them altogether is as foolish a thing as any man, woman or child can do.

It has been truly said that good manners are no burden, and that civility costs nothing, but there are some people foolhardy

enough to disregard doing the civil thing which, whatever they may think, can never harm themselves or anyone else,

and who at the same time will go out of their way for a bit of mischief, which never can serve them,

but sooner or later they will come to know better, as you shall hear of Carroll O'Daly,

a strapping young fellow up out of Connaught,

whom they used to call in his own country "Devil Daly."

Old Kilfarboy Society Summer Walks 2012
The first outing of this year will take place on Sunday, 13 May when Olive Carey
will give a guided tour to sites in the North East Burren. We will meet at
the Church Car Park in Miltown Malbay at 1.30 pm or alternatively at Cassidy's Pub,
Carron at 2.30 pm. From there we will drive a short distance north to
Templecronan. We will continue to Coolnatullagh where Olive will
reveal findings of research she has done in the area. Visits to the
Penitential Stations near St Fachnan's Well and Colman's Oratory/Mac
Duagh's Hermitage will complete our tour.

Strong walking shoes are recommended and there will be a small fee to cover insurance.

MÃIRE O'KEEFFE TO GIVE THE NEXT MARTIN REILLY LECTURE

Comhrái Ceoil (Music and Dance Studies at the Centre for Irish Studies, NUIG) is delighted to welcome Dr Máire OKeeffe to give the second Martin Reilly Lecture, which will take place at 6.30pm on 17^th May 2012, at Galway City Library.

This series is dedicated to Martin Reilly, the celebrated East Galway uilleann piper, who left a rich musical legacy to generations of pipers.  The lecture series gives an opportunity to researcher-practitioners in Irish traditional music and dance to present their research in a public forum. The lectures are illustrated with musical examples, and insights from the practitioners perspective. Galway and the West of Ireland has long been an important centre of traditional dance, music and song and this lecture series reflects the increasing interest in the study of these traditions.

Máire O Keeffe, a fiddle player, teacher and researcher from Tralee, Co. Kerry has many different musical interests including the fiddle traditions of Ireland, Scotland, Shetland, and Cape Breton as well as the music of Galicia in North West Spain. The title of this talk however is Journey into Tradition: The Irish Button Accordion, and it is the culmination of extensive research that traces the development of the button accordion within the Irish music tradition. It considers some of the key factors in the evolution of the button accordion in Ireland and some of the players who have contributed to an identifiably Irish style of playing. Máire is delighted to make the short hop across Galway Bay from Kinvara to give the Martin Reilly Lecture.
