GOVERNMENT GAZETTES

These are a very rich source of information... they have started with NSW... others to follow...

There are 1,890,955 available so far and you can sort them further into categories. Some are even illustrated...

[ N.B. There are some Government Gazettes for QLD available through Text Queensland, which is one of my favourite sites... they have far more than gazettes there and are well worth a visit...

There are many thousands of books, and over 100,000 freely available... you can read many of them online... including the 109,876 on Social History, among thousands of others. 

A huge selection can be read via Open Library, which is another great site..

Geoscience Australia Place Name Search

You can search by name, over all states, or you can define a search e.g.  [name of town], online...so you can view online. Some are only available in Reading Rooms, some are free to copy.
