BLOGGER BUZZ.. all please read...

This may affect you… I do hope you will still follow my blogs.. you can still subscribe by email and you get the blog sent to you as it is published. Or if you use RSS or Feedly or similar, nothing changes.

The main difference is that if you comment using a non Google account, you may have to change that. Comments are what keeps us going, we like to know that someone is reading and sharing. I do hope this doesn't inconvenience you. Your support is much valued.

 Thank you, Crissouli

In 2011, we announced the retirement of Google Friend Connect for all non-Blogger sites. We made an exception for Blogger to give readers an easy way to follow blogs using a variety of accounts. Yet over time, we've seen that most people sign into Friend Connect with a Google Account. So, in an effort to streamline, in the next few weeks we'll be making some changes that will eventually require readers to have a Google Account to sign into Friend Connect and follow blogs.

As part of this plan, starting the week of January 11, we'll remove the ability for people with Twitter, Yahoo, Orkut or other OpenId providers to sign in to Google Friend Connect and follow blogs. At the same time, we'll remove non-Google Account profiles so you may see a decrease in your blog follower count.

We encourage you to tell affected readers (perhaps via a blog post), that if they use a non-Google Account to follow your blog, they need to sign up for a Google Account, and re-follow your blog. With a Google Account, they'll get blogs added to their Reading List, making it easier for them to see the latest posts and activity of the blogs they follow.

We know how important followers are to all bloggers, but we believe this change will improve the experience for both you and your readers.

CLARE CHATTER...Dec 21, 2015 Winter Solstice, Begrudgery, Clare Roots Society

Winter Solstice : Newgrange

Above the entrance to the passage at Newgrange there is an opening called a roof-box. Its purpose is to allow sunlight to penetrate the passage and chamber at sunrise around the Winter Solstice. At 8:58am a narrow beam of light penetrates the roof-box and reaches the floor of the chamber, gradually extending to the rear of the passage. As the sun rises higher, the beam widens within the chamber so that the whole room becomes dramatically illuminated. After 17 minutes the sunbeam leaves the chamber and retreats back down the passage.

John Grenham today on a particular Irish trait- Begrudgery!

We are delighted with the success of the two most recent publications, the Cathedral by John Bradley and Ballynacally/Lissycasey by Mary Hester.

Clare Roots Society is now preparing it's  2016 -  2017 publication programme as part of it's future activities
and are inviting writers & editors to submit proposals with regard to this programme.

The Society would particularly like to invite Editors to come forward that would be willing to write about their particular area or Parish.
While there is no financial reward for anybody associated with the publication there is immense reward for the writer and their community.

You can contact me with your proposal or for further information.

Hope many of you are planning  your first or second or twentieth trip to Clare next year.  Apart from our conference taking place in September, Ennis is hosting the All Ireland Fleadh in August and Clare is definitely the place to be in 2016.

  • May the message of Christmas fill your life with joy and peace. Best wishes to you and your family during this holiday season.

  • Wishing you all a very peaceful Christmas. Best wishes to  you and your family during the holiday season.

CLARE ROOTS SOCIETY ANNOUNCES EXCITING NEW PUBLICATION PROGRAMME

    MESSAGE FROM LARRY BRENNAN

Mary Hester has done Ballynacally - Lissycasey some notable service.

Clare Roots Society is currently preparing its  2016 -  2017 publication programme as part of its future activities.

We are currently inviting writers & editors to submit proposals with regard to this programme.

The Society would particularly like to invite editors/writers, who would be willing to write about their particular area or Parish, to come forward. While there is no financial reward for anybody associated with the publication, there is immense reward for the writer and their community.

This is well summed up in the attached article, written by a local man, Seamus O' Reilly, about his Parish. Seamus is the editor of the Clare County Express.

    You can contact our secretary,
    Clara Hoyne <secretary@clareroots.org>
with your proposal, or for further information.

    DATES FOR THE DIARY

How DNA found two more generations of my 18th century Limerick ancestors

The company Family Tree DNA was launched in Texas in 2000 to help genealogists to use DNA evidence to build family trees, an art or science now referred to as genetic genealogy. The advances in technology and reduction in costs over the past 15 years have both been exponential. FTDNA is now in healthy competition with rival companies such as 23andMe and ancestry.com.

The value of DNA "testing" to genealogists increases dramatically with the number of people from the relevant geographical area and relevant extended family group already in the DNA databases used. Efforts are underway to persuade more Limerick people to submit DNA samples to the databases for purely genealogical purposes.

Lifelong genealogist Paddy Waldron has been using DNA comparisons to extend his family tree for the last two years. In this talk, he will explain the ancestral paths along which different parts of DNA are inherited and how they can be used to extend family trees.

As a case study, he will show how comparing DNA and family lore with a fourth cousin twice removed found in the Family Tree DNA database helped them both to break through genealogical brick walls and to add two extra generations to the family tree of their O'Dea ancestors from Newtown near Clarina.

DNA testing (using a simple cheek swab) will be available after the lecture for anyone who wants it. Special discounted prices (starting at approximately EUR80) have been negotiated for this event.

THE STORY OF NEWMARKET ON FERGUS - BOOK LAUNCH INVITATION

    YOU'RE INVITED

Dr Ciarán Ó Murchadha is launching the book 'The Story of Newmarket on Fergus' on 14th December at 8.00 p.m. in the Inn at Dromoland.

The Story of Newmarket on Fergus is written by Canon Reuben Butler and Máire Ní Ghruagáin.

Work began in 1997 on a calendar of dates to commemorate the millenium. With the retirement of Canon Butler as PP OF Newmarket on Fergus and the arrival as Parish Priest of Fr Tom Fitzpatrick in 2006,  the calendar was extended to become a history.
The book is based on the parish of Newmarket-on-Fergus.

Tradaree was the old name of Newmarket on Fergus and students of medieval history are mostly inclined to believe that the parish was set up by the Normans.

The one time Parish priest Sylvester Malone might disagree.
The educational, health and communications systems are traced to their foundation. Contact with the outside world has existed since the earliest times especially through estuary, road and railway and airport. The origins of railway road and post office feature in the book.

Other topics which had a bearing on the parish's history such as the famine and the textile industry are outlined. The calendar of original promise is retained as a chronology of events over the centuries of the last millennium.
