25 AUG 2013 KILRUSH DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY NATIONAL HERITAGE WEEK walking tour

25 AUGUST 2013 KDHS NATIONAL HERITAGE WEEK WALKING TOUR AT 2:30P.M.

Following on from the National Famine Commemoration 2013 held in Kilrush in May, Kilrush and District Historical Society will run a free guided walking tour of the auxiliary workhouses and other famine-related sites in the town of Kilrush for National Heritage Week. Most large buildings around Kilrush were pressed into service as auxiliary workhouses when the main workhouse became overcrowded during the Great Famine. The exchange of information in Kilrush in May during the National Famine Commemoration between so many historians of local, national and international standing has added greatly to knowledge of the era. The sites of eight of the nine auxiliary workhouses in the town mentioned in the records have now been definitively identified and will be seen on the tour, along with other locations associated with the history of the Great Famine in Kilrush Poor Law Union.

The tour will start from An Teach Ceoil in Grace Street, Kilrush at 2:30pm on Sunday 25th August and will last 2-3 hours. It is hoped that the weather will be better than when this tour was last scheduled in May. All those who missed out in May due to the rain or other causes (and those who want to experience it again) are welcome. See heritageweek.ie or kdhs.ie or contact Paul O'Brien (087 6641034) or Paddy Waldron (087 2547230) for further details.
