The launch will be preceded by Mass for Deceased Residents and Friends of St. Michael's at Ennis Cathedral celebrated by Fr. Tom Ryan, past resident of St. Michael's, at 7.30 p.m.

I have often mentioned the always interesting Co Clare Library blog... this is yet another good reason to follow it...

The Parishes of County Clare

Most of the genealogical and geographical information on Clare County Library’s website is arranged by civil parish. The reason for this is that between the 17th and early 20th centuries, the civil parish was the territorial unit used by government for its land surveys and censuses. Click here for a list of the civil parishes of Clare, and they are mapped here... They are divided into townlands, the smallest territorial unit, and are arranged into Baronies, the largest unit in the county system. Civil parishes are no longer in use for administrative purposes.

The O'Gorman Mahon

James Patrick Mahon. Born in Ennis,  Co. Clare,17th March 1802 he was educated at Trinity College, Dublin 

and became known as 'The O'Gorman Mahon'. He led an extravagant lifestyle travelling the world, 

and there are many unverified stories of his exploits abroad. He was involved in numerous military operations around the world. 

He was reputed to have attained the rank of General and Admiral in separate South America countries.

This lecture by Declan Barron tells of the evidence found for his travels in this part of the world.
