I am attaching a few photo's to give you a  flavour of what went on during the conference week.

It was a fantastic week with a packed  programme and lots of visitors to Ennis from near and wide.

Huge thanks to Peter Beirne and the staff in The Clare County Library, Local Studies Centre who gave three tours

during the week as did Mary Kearns and staff in the beautifully refurbished Abbey in Ennis. 

Without the local support we would have had no fringe programme.

We have had great feedback on our speakers on the day, one attendee said:

"Most enjoyable (and sometimes challenging!) list of speakers, with loads to learn from each one."

Fringe Events from Wednesday 3^rd to Friday 6^th to include tour of Local Studies Centre,

Ennis town walk, tour of newly opened Ennis Friary.

Also two evening lectures one on traditional Irish music and one on Irish Soldiers

in the British Army by Liam Curran.

APRIL TALK

Clare Roots Society will host its April talk entitled "The O'Shaughnessy's - Cinel Aodh na Echteghe, and their Co. Clare connections" given by Rory O'Shaughnessy in the Civic Room, Drumbiggle on Thursday 19 April 2012 at 8 pm.
O'Shaughnessy is a popular family name in Galway, Clare and Limerick. The Clan was known as Cinel Aodh na Echteghe – Aodh's people of the Aughtys and it controlled a large territory of land on the Galway-Clare border. Dermot O'Shaughnessy, Chief of the Clan was knighted by Henry the 8th during the 16th century. For a period up to the Jacobite defeat at the Battle of the Boyne, they held a dominant position of power in the region. The talk hopes to look at the O'Shaughnessy Clan history examining in particular it's Clare connections.

Rory O' Shaughnessy is a stonemason and heritage practitioner. He has a degree in history and archaeology and a Higher Diploma in Irish Heritage Management. He carries out heritage talks and walks as well as doing some heritage illustrating. Rory is also active in National Schools working on the Heritage in Schools Scheme and Burrenbeo's Eco-beo Programme. This year Rory is Coordinator of the O'Shaughnessy Gathering, an event held every two years. The event which includes music, tours, talks and Medieval Banquets is to be held in Gort from May 10th to 13th 2012.

All are welcome to the talk. There is a cover charge of €5 for non-members.

7TH AUGHTY EARTH DAY GATHERING.

Slógadh Eachtaí 2012: Cillíní Díoma is Liathdrom will take place at Leitrim Hall, Leitrim, Loughrea. The date is Saturday 21st April and registration is at 9.15. The Aughty Earth Day Gathering is organised each year in a different location in Co. Clare or Co.Galway by a local group. The event was previously held in Crusheen, Kilchreest /Castledaly, Woodford, Tuamgraney, Gort and at Lough Graney in 2011.

The day is informal and is dedicated to hospitality. Everyone is welcome to attend and to share their knowledge and interest in the heritage of the Sliabh Aughty.
