VALE SISTER MARY WHELAN (SISTER MARY FRANCIS GABRIEL) FROM CLARE TO BRISBANE

SISTER MARY WHELAN..

BORN IN 1922, 
second child of Susan and John Whelan
Islebrack, Miltown Malbay
One of a family of eight, 
survived by three of her sisters
Susan Walsh (Killarney, Co Kerry)
Brid Porter (Killimor, Co Galway)
Margaret McCarthy ( Boston, USA)
Died December 21, 2016


She was professed in Timoleague as
Sister Mary Francis Gabriel
on Jan 14, 1946.
Later in the year, she travelled to Sydney, Australia, 
by ship and then by train to Brisbane,

to All Hallows' Convent, 
on January 1, 1947.
Mary is buried in Nudgee Cemetery, Brisbane,
beside her younger sister, Teresa, 
Sister Mary Bernadine, 
 who predeceased her in 2012.

All Hallows’ Convent is one of the oldest surviving houses in Brisbane, Adderton, built in 1858 by John Petrie. The building became the first permanent home for the Sisters of Mercy in Queensland in 1863, and for 144 years served as the Mother house of the Brisbane Congregation.

including the Sisters of Mercy.
