Instead of our usual lecture on the last Tuesday of the month, our June event is a summer outing to Birr Castle. This trip will take place on Sunday June 30th 2019. Noon start at the castle, pay and display car park located opposite the castle gates. Please organise your own transport to the castle.
The castle and estate at Birr have been owned by the Parsons family for almost 400 years. In this time, Birr Castle Demesne has seen a host of scientific and technological achievement, much of which has changed the world.
A main feature on the grounds of the castle is the "Great Telescope" of the third Earl of Rosse, an astronomical telescope with a 183-cm reflector. It was completed in 1845 and was used for several decades before the last observations were made in the first years of the 20th century.
Admission is €15 to the castle, science centre and grounds. Places are limited so please e-mail kilrushhistoricalsociety@gmail.com with the subject line "Birr Castle booking" to let us know how many people will be coming and to indicate whether you will be driving (approx. 2 hours each way from Kilrush) or looking for transport.
The Society AGM which normally precedes the last lecture before the summer has been deferred to the evening of our September lecture.
