  1. The concept is a good one but they weren't bride ships....Ireland keeps latching on to this concept.

    2. For those who are interested in this subject, there are many references to orphan girls, 'bride ships', etc. What the original concept was, was an aim to bring single girls to Australia to balance the population which in those days, had a large number of single men. It worked... whichever way you look at. Not all girls were total orphans, but a good many came from workhouses.

If you research, you will often come across the ship name 'Earl Grey' and 'Earl Grey Famine Orphans...'. One who has done extensive research on that particular lot is Trevor McClaughlin...some great reading here..

      Another clipping I had...

The various stories and events are interwoven... with so called 'bride ships', orphan schemes, and those who left, either willingly or not, post famine. You can see one of the many Irish memorials here...

More on the memorial in Sydney... this takes you to the database of those listed on the memorial..

So much more is there for the searching... don't just read one article, read a number to get a balance... it's not just time to make a cuppa and settle back, better off to make a thermos... you'll be there for awhile...

    3. Thanks for the balance Chris...I appreciated that the term came from Ireland, not you.

    4. That's fine, wouldn't worry either way...you reminded me to add the extra, as I intended to do. I find the whole concept interesting, to say the least. As far as I know to date, none of mine came out this way, but then again, so much more to explore.
