These sites include Kilmacduagh, Coole Park, Kiltartan Museum, Thoor Ballylee, Killinane Graveyard, Roxborough Gates, Woodville Walled Garden, and St. Brendan’s Cathedral. MARRINAN CLAN TO MEET IN KILRUSH: AUG 21-23, 2015

MARRINAN CLAN TO MEET IN KILRUSH
 Aug 21-23, 2015

Every 2 years since 1997 descendants of the Marrinan's of past centuries have met to trace their family history. Since the first gathering in Minnesota a huge amount of information has been gathered. The next gathering will be centred in Kilrush over the weekend of August 21st - 23rd. The last gathering was in October 2013 in Cape Cod, USA and the most recent gathering in Ireland was in Ennistymon in 2011.

The name Marrinan with its various spellings of Marnon, Maranane, etc has been prominent since the middle ages, but one of the striking aspects of the gatherings is the attendance of so many who no longer bear the name but who are proud of their Marrinan ancestry. The history of the Marrinan's of Clare like so many other families is one of relocation and emigration, not to mention transportation under the "to hell or to Connaught"edict of Cromwell. In 1830 there was over 180 families tenant farmers in Co Clare. By the mid 1850s, this number had fallen by more than half.

The bulk of the families before this huge dispersal were in the parishes of Inagh, Miltown, Ennistymon, Kilrush and Kilkee. With the descendants of those 19th century emigrants mostly in USA, Australia and Britain, there has always been a good attendance by them. Already there are over twenty confirmed from USA for this year's event. In recent months a number of members of the clan have taken DNA tests and already some interesting connections mostly in the 4th and 5th cousin range have been confirmed. Once again this year we are asking those who have Marrinan ancestry and who no longer bear the name to come to the gathering.

There are two Facebook groups re this that you might be interested in...

The weekend begins with a meet and greet in the Haven Arms Bar, Kilrush on Friday evening August 21st from 8:00 pm. The main formal part of the programme will be in the Comhaltas Teach Cheoil in Kilrush on Saturday 22nd from 1.30pm.

Corey Marrinan from the USA will talk on DNA and the comprehensive family tree charts which have been developing over the years will be on display. This is a great opportunity for new members to add their information or to search for missing links in their own trees.

Saturday evening dinner at Kilrush Golf Club at 6.30 pm will be followed by a night of entertainment from clan members many of whom are prominent in traditional music circles. Mass in Cooraclare on Sunday at 11:00 am will include traditional music followed by a bus tour to some relevant townlands and cemeteries. The usual golf tournament for the Marrinan Trophy presented in 1999 by the late Jack Marrinan will take place Sunday afternoon in Kilrush Golf Club. For anyone interested, access to the family trees will available until 5:00 pm on Sunday evening. For further information contact Micheál at 087) 3638002 or Grainne at 087)9276369.

NEWS FLASH: 1939 REGISTER COMING SOON !

FROM THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES, UNITED KINGDOM

Do look for all nationalities when this arrives.

1939 Register coming soon
In 1939, on the eve of the Second World War, the government introduced an act that would allow them to gather vital information about the country's population. This information would inform decisions on identity cards and rationing.

In 2015 Findmypast, in partnership with The National Archives, are publishing the Register online, for the first time. The 1939 Register provides unprecedented insight into a country on the verge of war, and bridges the gap in Census records caused by this war.

You can sign up to receive updates on the release of the Register from Findmypast.
Behind the scenes
Findmypast have been hard at work digitising the 1939 Register.

Go behind the scenes to see the conservation and scanning that is being done in preparation for its online release later this year.

NEW IN THE IGP ARCHIVES FOR JUNE

Of special note this month is a new project we began a month ago. We are transcribing ledgers for funerals from J.& C. Nichols, Ltd.
Dublin. Some of the deceased were sent to other counties, so this is a great source for someone trying to find out where a relative or
ancestor was buried. Prior to the date we started with (late 1919),
the ledgers are at the National Archives of Ireland. We are very
pleased that IGP has been allowed to share these with researchers.
Because multiple locations are listed - we have this set of files
under the *Ireland* heading.
